A Motivating Manager

Being a Manager

Being a Manager is not all about just shouting at your staff to make sure they do the job whilst you sit with a brew a nd your feet up reading the newspaper – although I imagine there are those out there that do!

It’s about being an authority within your business in the area/ subject in which you work.  Not only do you have to have this expertise requirement but you have the time manage your staff.

This includes making sure training needs are met, making sure that they all have clear goals and objectives so they can better themselves within the role they have. Appraisals take a lot of time and responsibility to put together when done properly and that responsibility lies in the hand a an extremely proficient and good manager.

It’s also about making sure they have the best opportunities and you don’t just look after yourself!

Time Management

Time management is all about organising your time to ensure you acheive the maximum amount of tasks within your day – mainly your working day.

So what are the best tips to help organise you day:

Write a list – of all the tasks you need to do. tick them off as each one is completed.

Plan your day – what you NEED to do, what you SHOULD do, and what you WANT to do – and stick to it

Use a calendar – outlook or similar – split your tasks out and allocate time for each one.  daily, weekly or monthly reoccuring tasks can be scheduled in for the year using your outlook calendar.

You are at your most productive the day before your annual leave – time management is excellent – apply this everyday and completeting your work load will be a breeze!

A Manager or friend?

So, you’ve started a new role – brilliant. It was time for a change.  Your new Manager is a good laugh and you can more or less talk about anything. The work gets done but the atmosphere is relaxed and enjoyable.  But then all of a sudden you notice a big difference in their behaviour.

Being  a Manager means you have to ensure a department runs smoothly and all the work gets done, problems solved and everyone is motivated.  Its a tough role to do and to do it properly means you also need respect form your team.  You need to be an expert within your industry as well as having excellent management skills, which are often just expected rather than being given training.

Sometimes taking a step back to enable you to fulfil a managment role is just one of those things you have to do to keep you sane and focused!

Knowing your staff

When I first started in my previous company, there was two of us doing the same role and were both being managed by the same Manager.

We were both extremely different and although we were doing the same role quite easily we had different personalities and skill sets.  My colleague seemed to hit it off straight away with our Manager and although we got on brilliantly too, Our Manager and I didn’t.

A few months into the role it wasn’t unpleasant but our differences were starting to come to the suface.  However, we realised this, so had a meeting and talked about why we weren’t getting on as good as my colleague. Within half an hour we were sorted.

My point to this is that is takes an extremely good Manager to notice this and not only that but to ensure bridges were built and differences sorted.  Needless to say – my confidence grew I had great respect for her in the workplace but was also able to have a few drinks with her out of work – but knew not to push it too far!

Managers should be fair yet stern

During one of my previous jobs, there was a major hierarchy problem with the structure of the company. I worked at the bottom of the hierarchy because it was my first job out of university and hey we all have to start somewhere! Down at the bottom of the food chain – I have one manager, she was a very good manager, very professional and I always knew where I stood with her because she told me the rules and I knew the boundaries and I knew when not to go too far.

However, the manager other teams in the company lets them get away with murder they come in the morning and chat away when they should be working and they do not concentrate and work as hard as we do and sometimes they get told off for it and other times she lets them get away with it. This is not good management because her staff don’t know when they can talk and when they can’t!

Qualities for a Successful Manager

There are some essential qualities that make a successful manager and these are: Planning and managing time effectively. They also need to be a successful listener as they need to make sure that they are able to listen and act on their colleague’s conversations. Delegation is another vital quality as they need to take responsibility for their colleague’s workloads and distribute work so that everyone is busy but no one is over worked. Motivation is necessary so that a manager can offer a reward scheme to their employees where they will receive a prize or something if they complete targets or meet deadlines.

There are many different people’s opinions as to what makes a success and good manager and achieving them is not an easy task. A good leader needs to ensure that they are making the right decisions for your company as well as being a good leader. One of the most important qualities of a good leader is ensuring that you know how to encounter and effectively deal with various problems. Knowledge is also an essential quality of a good manager as you need to ensure that you are fully up to speed with your company’s policies as well as having a full understanding of the industry that your company is in. However one of the most important qualities is to create and maintain a good working team.

What your Business Card say about you and your Company

Every company has the obligatory business card, normally this consists of the company’s logo and the employees personal business contact information. However, in my last employment we were told to be more creative when it came to our business cards. Obviously we needed to include all of the relevant information, such as our mobile numbers, e-mail address and direct dial extension numbers. This employer also wanted us to include an image on the back on our card which would sum up our personalities as they felt this would be a talking for any potential clients. I chose the Trevi Fountain in Rome as this conveyed my interest in ancient architecture and my hobby of travelling around the world.
