Managing leather garments is a necessity when you consider the cost of a good leather jacket, or a pair of leather shoes. I take pride in my appearance and care and maintenance is essential in order to get a long life out of your leather goods.

Firstly maintenance – this can begin with the use of a conditioner specifically designed to help manage your leather garment. Try and avoid using wax or other products – you need to allow leather jackets to breathe and most waxes will not. If your jacket gets wet in a downpour be sure to let it dry naturally – don’t blast it with the hairdryer. When drying it naturally try to avoid direct sunlight. Also heat will tend to dry the jacket out so just leave it to dry on its own at room temperature.

Secondly – if you get stains on your leather jacket then don’t panic. Wipe the stain in the direction of the natural grain or lie of the leather and use a micro fibre cloth (often known as a lint free cloth). Also work from the centre outwards for best results. For more stubborn stains try and test on an inconspicuous area just in case – you don’t want to cause permant damage. And treat cuffs and hems with slightly more care and attention.

Finally – store the jacket in the correct environment. Keep clear from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight and moisture, don’t fold it up and keep it in a plastic bag. Simply hang it on a sturdy hanger that supports the natural lie of the jacket – preferably on a coat hanger in a wardrobe so that you avoid any stretching.

And if all else fails and you need desperate help – have it professionally cleaned. It’s well worth the cost as your leather jacket should last forever.
